One of the greatest benefits of sarcasm, in my humble opinion, is the way it can act as a double-edge sword when you want to express yourself or test social boundaries.
For instance, you could make a comment like"What a lovely day" when it is clearly storming to regard the obvious change and weather and your disappointment.
The way a person picks up on your sarcasm ( or doesn't) and responds to it can be a way to test social boundaries as well.
